Gas Perm Lens Solutions -
Get The Lowdown On Permeable Contact Lenses.
Do you want the lowdown on gas perm
lens solutions? Gas permeable lenses are relatively new
in terms of the history of the contact lens. They are hard lenses,
but should not be confused with the original hard lenses, which
were made of PMMA. This hard plastic was not gas permeable, which
means that they did not allow oxygen to pass through them to the
eye. They eyes require oxygen to remain healthy, and extended use
of PMMA contact lenses was detrimental to the long term, health
of the eyes.
A gas perm lens will allow oxygen through,
and consequently are more comfortable for the eyes. They are also
made of silicone, which is a more flexible plastic than that made
with PMMA, which increases the level of comfort experienced by the
user. Soft lenses, whilst providing a tighter fit to the eye, do
not allow as much oxygen to pass to the eyes as to gas perm lenses.
Gas permeable lenses are also resilient to
damage. Certainly more so than soft lenses. They are also much less
likely to become contaminated and infected. Their strength also
allows alternative means of cleaning, such as cleaning with a contact
lens thermal cleaner, which in most cases, is more convenient
and easier than conventional cleaning.
Because gas perm lenses do not contain water,
tear lipids do not bind themselves to the lenses as occurs with
soft lenses. And whilst there may be a steeper comfort curve whilst
getting used to the lenses, they could ultimately prove better for
your eyes in the long run.
